After serving in the United States Army and spending six years in Afghanistan — first as part of his deployment and then as a government contractor — Cameron Lee returned home with a desire to give back to his veteran community in any way possible.

This year, as a franchisee with the painting concept Fresh Coat Painters, Lee earned back a large percentage of his franchise fee as part of the brand’s Winner’s Circle Program, which rewards hard-working franchise owners that hit predefined milestones by refunding their entire franchise fee over time. But instead of taking the $20,000, Lee is putting it toward something near and dear to his heart by donating it to the Friends of the Troops.

Friends of the Troops is a 501c3 nonprofit organization established to help members of the United States Armed forces who, for any reason, slip through the cracks of other organizations. The nonprofit is led entirely by volunteers who are committed to honoring, aiding and encouraging veterans and members of every branch of the United States military.

As a veteran-owned business, Lee says he aims to employ as many veterans as he can through Fresh Coat, and this donation is an extension of that support. “I knew I could give the money to our nation’s heroes who really need it,” he said. “The most important thing to me is giving back, and we try to help veterans organizations in every way we can each year.”

After the military, Lee worked as a vice president for a defense company before eventually deciding to enter the home service industry. He currently owns four other home services companies in his community of Chattanooga. Since opening his Fresh Coat operation in 2019, Lee has continued to scale his business, allowing him to participate in the coveted Winner’s Circle Program.

Lee will be donating $20,000 that he received from the Winner’s Circle program to Friends of the Troops, and the Fresh Coat corporate team will be matching that donation, for a total of $40,000 donated to the organization.

Tara Riley, President of Fresh Coat, says she is proud to see Lee donate his Winner’s Circle rebate to a meaningful cause. She notes that this kind of passion-based initiative is exactly what the team looks for in franchisees.

“The Winner’s Circle program aims to attract people who are focused and determined to hit their business goals — passionate and committed franchisees,” said Riley. “The costs that go into launching a franchise can be returned for owners on the right track. We want reward-driven people like Cameron working the plan and staying committed to their goals.”
