Some local Boy Scouts are taking part in a new fundraiser this month by teaming up with a local business.

"Do you have a goal of how many moon pies you want to sell in these next couple of months?" Channel 3 asked.

"300,000," answered Boy Scout Ross Loean-Phillips.

Loean-Phillips and several other boy scouts across Chattanooga have big goals for this new fundraiser, which involves selling moon pies with the Chattanooga Bakery.

"We're selling pumpkin, vanilla, chocolate, mint chocolate, banana, and chocolate," said Loean-Phillips.

Cubmaster Kyle Croft said creating fundraisers like this was difficult over the past year and continues to be a challenge.

"Throughout the pandemic, it's been especially hard to do fundraisers and keep the kids active," said Croft.

He wants more fundraisers like this and said they're important for Boy Scout troops to learn skill sets and create goals early-on.

"We really have personal goals for our kids because not only does the money help our packs be able to afford awards and stuff, but also a lot of times the kids get money into their camp account as well," said Croft.

He said about 500,000 scouts are selling moon pies right now, both at certain stores and door-to-door.

To honor 9/11, certain donations will go overseas.

"We've teamed up with Friends of the Troops and for an extra $50 donation, we're actually going to give a case of moon pies to the troops," said Croft. "They're going to ship them to local troops from our areas, they're going to get a little taste of home and I think that's great."

Loean-Phillips is already getting started on his goal of selling 300,000 moon pies and is excited to keep working day-by-day to possibly reach it.

"My favorite part of it all is when we get our prize for selling moon pies or popcorn," said Loean-Phillips.
